Vukani Mawethu is a multi-racial, multi-generational, community-based, social justice, Bay Area non-profit choir, founded in 1986 by James Madhlope Phillips, a South African cultural and union organizer of the African National Congress. Formed as part of the anti-apartheid movement, we are united by our opposition to racism and apartheid, injustice and oppression -- and by our commitment to peace, justice and equality -- internationally.
We sing freedom songs, in rich 4-part harmony, which have grown out of decades of struggle, besides spirituals, gospel, labor and civil rights songs, primarily from South Africa, the U.S., and around the world. We sing to entertain and to inspire people to action, while we raise funds for AIDS projects and grass roots youth efforts in Southern Africa and here in the Oakland-San Francisco Bay Area. We sing for small homeless shelters and orphanages, and for large banquets and rallies.
We have sung with and for many well-known personalities and heads of state, such as Nelson Mandela -- before 78,000 people in Oakland, California following his release after 27+ years in prison -- and in a private session with Madiba, Graca Machel and Ahmed Kathrada in Johannesburg, South Africa on our last cultural tour of Southern Africa, from which we just returned in April 2009.
