OneLife Institute is a nonprofit interfaith organization providing resources for the integration of spirituality and social action. Through classes, workshops, retreats, publications, events, counseling, consulting and facilitation services we seek to support and empower individuals and groups in personal healing and the creation of a just, compassionate and sustainable world.
We believe that spirituality and social action are complimentary and synergistic. Contemplative and other spiritual practices can motivate and sustain activism, offering replenishment in the face of burnout and fostering integrity, compassion, vision, and hope. Activism provides a context for spiritual practice, transforming our selves as we work to transform our world. And further, as each of us is individually transformed, so too is the global collective.
We are particularly dedicated to supporting the sustainability of social action and community service by nurturing and inspiring activists, organizers, caregivers, educators, artists, and professionals and volunteers in the nonprofit sector. We also plant seeds of social concern in individuals who do not primarily identify as activists, encouraging critical reflection on social conditions and modeling a worldview that honors the dignity and worth of all lifekind.
We recognize the value of creative arts such as music, dance, poetry, spoken word, and visual art as essential to well-being on every level – physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, and social. The arts are incorporated in both a supporting role and as the featured element in our retreats, classes, events and other settings – performance and participatory. We also celebrate the transformative power of the arts for movements of social change.
One of our core programs is an annual art, jazz, and spoken word event, Transformative Visions. Scheduled for to coincide with the observance of “A Season for Nonviolence” and the anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Iraq, the event is intended to both challenge and inspire – showcasing community talent, offering a prophetic response to the critical concerns of the present day and lifting up a vision of peace and possibility. A web-based version of Transformative Visions provides an ongoing platform for the message, as well as a vehicle for continued outreach and community building.
