The Woodminster Summer Musicals are performed under the stars at Woodminster Amphitheater, an open-air performance facility in Joaquin Miller Park, high in the Oakland Hills. The park's spectacular views and serene woodsy environment made it the perfect setting for the amphitheater, cascades, reflecting pool, and paths that were originally built as a WPA project in 1939-40.
A uniquely American art form, American musical theatre has evolved considerably over the decades. Producers Associates has always remained true to its mission of presenting big, entertaining musicals from various eras. For many Oaklanders, Woodminster was their first exposure to live theatre, and they remember being brought there as children for a picnic supper and the summertime magic of music under the stars. In these families, season tickets are passed down from generation to generation, and evenings at Woodminster are an annual tradition.
In 2010, the organization will present “Hairspray” July 9-18, “The Music Man” August 6-15, and “Paint Your Wagon” September 3-12. The shows are performed with a combination of professional actors and talented community members. The live orchestra is composed of professional musicians.
Woodminster Summer Musicals provide a rare opportunity to see quality Broadway musicals at a price half that of the major houses across the Bay. To make the experience available to as many people as possible, the organization has created a variety of programs ranging from a new $10 preview night to half-price tickets for groups, to a “Kids Come Free” programs which provides free tickets for about 3,000 children and teens each summer. The Woodminster Summer Musicals are a beloved tradition for many Oakland families, and a memorable treat for visitors to the city. More information at www.woodminster.com.
