I am visual artist and curator living and working in Oakland, California.
In my work I investigate personal narrative, individualism and private space. My memories are like abstracted representations, and with each there is an appropriate visual dialogue that I can take advantage of. I deliberately make myself aware to avoid fabricating an alternate reality with symbolism, mysticism or iconography, and rather, focus on form as my visual language. My format is interdisciplinary: alternating or working in tandem between painting and embroidery.
I feel that the role of craftsmanship is tantamount to any sort of intellectual pursuit. Whatever the medium, it is important for me to keep my own hand in the process – including building supports, stretching and sizing canvas, framing my work and hand-stitching my embroideries. Not only is it ethically important for me, but also the rewards and breakthroughs are often reaped when I’m in those deep phases of concentration.
