Kerri Johnson is a practicing artist, curator and gallery owner. She received her BFA in Photography from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2003. Kerri is the Co-Owner of Blankspace, an artist run gallery she started with partner Jason Byers in 2006. Blankspace features exhibitions of emerging contemporary artists and was one of the recipients of the first Alternative Exposure grant in 2007. The gallery has been featured in SweetArt, San Francisco and Café magazines and their exhibitions have been written about in numerous local and national publications.
Kerri has served as a panelist and juror for a wide range of art awards and exhibitions for Bay Area institutions including: California State University East Bay, Headlands Center for the Arts, Sebastopol Center for the Arts and The City of Oakland. She was recently invited to do portfolio reviews at Kala Art Institute and the San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art and has sat on panels at CCA, BAM/PFA, UC Berkeley, SFAI, Root Division. She will be sitting on an upcoming panel at the DiRosa Preserve with Adam Hatch (Co-Director Lobot Gallery) and René de Guzman (Senior Curator, The Oakland Museum of California). Kerri is a member of the Richmond Art Center Curatorial Board, Oakland Art Murmur and ArtTable.
My work is influenced by an amalgamation of external forces like music, literature, fairy tales and historical events. Utilizing primarily gouache and ink the figures I create allude to characters in an outré odyssey. The resulting images have been described as oddly beautiful, strangely fascinating, and darkly magical.
